6.36 Drying Arctic char

Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), which is simply air-dried, not smoked, hangs on the port side of the Viola Dee. Known as “Labrador sea trout” until the 1960s, Arctic char, along with caribou, are primary local sources of protein.

6.37 Harmony in Soapstone

The annual arrival of the Harmony bringing fresh food, new missionaries, and mail, was the highlight of the summer season and the mission’s lifeline to England, the Moravian headquarters. Its arrival must have inspired one of the mission’s Inuit to carve this representation of the ship with its British ensign, which we discovered on a soapstone outcrop during an archaeological survey in 1977.

In Nain the young people were curious and easy to talk to, but the community has suffered from the closure of the northern Labrador Inuit settlements and their consolidation into southern towns, which lacked sufficient game and natural resources to sustain a traditional economy. Although living in a bounteous land, much of north coast’s food resources are too distant to be accessed from Nain. Where there is no work for the younger age cohorts, there is restlessness. As a result Nain and other Labrador Inuit and Innu communities suffer high rates of alcoholism, addiction, suicide, and social violence. In this regard the social problems of these populations are similar to those in other regions of the North. Today there is controversy about whether the Inuit benefitted more than they suffered from their European benefactors. Joel was succinct in expressing his thoughts on the diminishing influence of the Moravians: “Free at last!”
